Traditional Italian Tiramisu

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 12 ladyfinger cookies
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy.
  2. Heat the milk in a saucepan and gradually whisk it into the egg mixture.
  3. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook until it thickens slightly. Let it cool.
  4. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  5. Fold the whipped cream into the cooled custard mixture.
  6. Combine the coffee and liqueur in a shallow dish.
  7. Dip each ladyfinger in the coffee mixture for about a second, then place them in a serving dish.
  8. Spread half of the cream mixture over the ladyfingers, then repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and cream.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  10. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder.

  • For a richer flavor, consider using espresso instead of regular coffee.
  • Use high-quality mascarpone cheese for a creamier texture.
